The terms the Gear Generator and Gear Generator Pro desktop apps are licensed under.

Version 2, last updated: 21 October 2026

The agreement

This agreement is between you and Abel Vincze, the author of Gear Generator (“we”, “us”). It covers the desktop apps Gear Generator and Gear Generator Pro for macOS, Windows and Linux, every version and update of them we make available, their user manual, and, for Gear Generator Pro, the ggview.js script with its npm package and WordPress plugin (together, “the software”).

By downloading, installing or using the software you accept this agreement. If you do not accept it, do not download, install or use the software. If you accept it for a company or another organisation, you confirm that you may bind it, and “you” means that organisation.

The edition sold on the Mac App Store is licensed under the App Store's terms instead (Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement).

Your license

The software is licensed, not sold. With a license key bought from us, through our reseller Paddle, you get a non-exclusive, non-transferable, lifetime license to install the app the key is for and to use it, for any purpose, personal or commercial, on as many computers at a time as the key allows: three for each license bought with it, unless your purchase says otherwise.

A Gear Generator Pro key opens Gear Generator too; a Gear Generator key opens only Gear Generator. You may move a key to another computer by deactivating it on one first (License… › Deactivate). Without a valid key the app opens only as far as its license sheet.

The key is yours alone. A key bought for a company or another organisation may be used by the people who work for that organisation, on its computers, up to the number of computers the key allows; they are bound by this agreement too, and the organisation is responsible for them. Do not publish the key, share it outside yourself or your organisation, or let anyone else use it on their computers.

Copies

You may make only the copies needed to install and run the software on the computers your license allows, and one backup copy, which must keep our copyright and license notices.

Apart from that you may not copy the software, and you may not sell, rent, lease, lend, sublicense, distribute, publish or otherwise make it available to anyone else, as it is or as part of anything else, as a download, on a network or as a service. Anyone may download the software from geargenerator.com themselves.

Reverse engineering and reusing our solutions

How Gear Generator works, its geometry, its methods and their implementation, is the result of many years of our work, and it is what this license protects most. You may not, and may not let or help anyone else:

  • decompile, disassemble, decrypt or otherwise reverse engineer the software, or try to recover its source code, its algorithms or how it works inside;
  • modify, translate or adapt the software, or make works derived from it;
  • use anything learned, recovered or copied from the software (its code, algorithms, methods, formulas, data, file formats, or the way it solves what it does) to make, improve or help make any other software, service or product, above all one that does what the software does;
  • remove, bypass or defeat its license check, its limit of computers, its site keys, the “Made with Gear Generator” badge of web views, or any other protection.

Where the law of your country lets you do some of this whatever a license says (in the European Union, for example, decompiling a program as far as needed to make another, independent program work with it), you may do it only as far as that law allows, only for that purpose, and what you learn may not be used for anything else, given to anyone else, or used to make software similar to ours.

Your designs

The designs you make with the software, and the files you save or export from it (.gg documents, SVG, DXF, STEP, STL, OBJ and PDF files, web views), are yours. We claim no rights in them, and you may use them as you like, commercially too, together with what the software puts in them, such as labels in its stroke font.

Gear Generator Pro: web views

With a Gear Generator Pro license you may put ggview.js (or its npm package or WordPress plugin) on your websites, to show web views made with Gear Generator Pro, and use the site keys your license gets there for the domains they were made for. You may not use ggview.js for anything else, modify it, give it to others apart from your own web views, or use a site key on another domain.

Gear Generator Pro: the AI Assistant

The AI Assistant lets an AI app you choose (Claude, for example, or another app that speaks the Model Context Protocol) work in the open design. Whether you turn it on, and which AI app you connect, is up to you: that app is provided by others under their own terms, and we are not responsible for it or for what it does. Check its work as you would check your own.

Updates and support

Your license covers the updates of the same app that we make available for download. We may improve and change the software, but we do not promise any particular update or feature, or for how long updates come. Support is by e-mail, at support@geargenerator.com.

Buying and refunds

The software is sold by Paddle (Paddle.com Market Limited), our reseller and merchant of record, under its own terms of sale: Paddle handles payment, invoices and refunds. If a purchase is refunded or its payment is reversed, its license ends, and we may revoke its key.

Ending the license

The license ends at once if you break this agreement, or when its purchase is refunded or reversed. When it ends, you must stop using the software and delete every copy of it. What this agreement says about copies, reverse engineering, your designs, liability and the law still applies after that.

Check your designs

The software works out gear geometry carefully and is tested, but a gear that is made has to be right for its use: its material, loads, tolerances, lubrication and safety. Check every design, its sizes and the parts made from it before you rely on them, and have designs for machines whose failure could hurt someone checked by a qualified engineer. The forces and torques it shows are estimates.

Warranty

The software is provided as is. As far as the law allows, we give no warranty beyond what this agreement says and what the law gives you anyway, and we do not promise that it is free of errors or suits a particular purpose. If you buy as a consumer, the rights the law gives you (for example, to software that matches its description) are not limited by this agreement.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as lost profit, lost data or stopped production, and our total liability for anything to do with the software is limited to the price paid for the license. Nothing in this agreement limits a liability the law does not allow to be limited, such as for harm caused on purpose or by gross negligence, or for injury to life, body or health.

Our rights

The software, its code, its design, its stroke font, its icons and its documentation are protected by copyright and other laws, and every right this agreement does not give you stays with us. The names Gear Generator and Gear Generator Pro and their icons identify our software: use them only to refer to it. The software contains open-source components under their own licenses, and nothing here limits what those licenses allow for those components.

The law

This agreement is governed by the law of Hungary, without its rules on conflicts of laws, and the courts of Hungary decide disputes about it. If you buy as a consumer in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of that country, and may go to its courts too. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Changes, and the rest

We may change this agreement for later versions of the software; each version is covered by the agreement accepted when it was downloaded. If a part of it is found invalid, the rest still applies, and the invalid part is read as closely to its purpose as the law allows. Together with Paddle's terms of sale, this is the whole agreement between us about the software. Questions: support@geargenerator.com.
